Is Jamaica Safe To Visit
Jamaica is generally considered a safe place for tourism. The US State Department currently has it rated at a Level 3 Travel Advisory. This means there are there are some things to keep in mind to help ensure your safety, even within all inclusive resorts.
- Avoid walking around at night, especially in secluded or poorly lit areas.
- Avoid using public bus transportation. Use Ubers or licensed taxis instead.
- Carefully protect your valuables, wallets, and bags in public areas. Consider using a travel belt for your credit cards, ID, and small amount of carrying cash (if any).
- Use reputable and licensed tour operators for any excursions.
Overall violent crimes are down year over year in Jamaica, but always keep in mind that this island nation still has elements of social unrest of a developing country. These are generally outside the tourist zones, but staying alert and using common sense will go a long way in keeping you safe.
Should you have any emergencies while abroad, the US Embassy in Jamaica or local law enforcement (emergency phone #119) will be good points of first contact.

Food
- The most iconic dish in Jamaica is undoubtedly Jerk Chicken, a spicy poultry marinated in allspice, Scotch bonnet peppers, and other local seasonings. I highly recommend Scotchie’s in Montego Bay for the best Jerk Chicken around!
- Try other local favorites like plantains, goat curry, and ackee and saltfish (the national dish).
- Jamaica has some of the best rum in the world. Be sure to try some locally distilled rum while there!
- There is also a vibrant street food culture. Some must haves include Jamaican beef patties and bammy (a traditional flatbread).
Currency
- The local currency is the Jamaican Dollar (JMD). However, most local merchants will either accept credit cards or United States Dollar.
- Should you need local currency for purchases, you can get it from an ATM or, in some cases, your resort. The current exchange rate is approximately 150 JMD to 1 USD. Note that it is best to use the ATMS from reputable banks to avoid any potential scams and high fees.
Transportation
- Transportation is readily available throughout Jamaica. In popular areas like Montego Bay, taxis and Ubers are easily accessible.
- Make sure any taxis are licensed taxis. You can differentiate certified taxi because they will have red license plates with the letters “PP” on them. As apposed to regular vehicles that will have white licence plates.
- It is best to have your hotel or resort request taxis for you to make sure they are certified. Regardless, make sure you negotiate the price upfront before starting your trip to avoid getting scammed.
- Note that it is advised to avoid public buses in Jamaica. They are very cheap, but they are very crowded and have higher risk of getting pit pocketed.
