Sandals Royal Caribbean Vs Montego Bay

Sandals Royal Caribbean Vs Montego Bay: Which Is Better?

Montego Bay embodies the Jamaica spirit – chill vibes, pristine white sand beaches, and incredible cuisine. On top of that, it’s quick and cheap to get to!

Sandals Resorts has two locations just minutes from the Montego Bay airport, Sandals Caribbean Cay (formally Sandals Royal Caribbean) and Sandals Montego Bay. The good news is that you can access all the amenities at both regardless of which one you stay at, but each of them are distinctly better suited for different preferences.

Having been to both of these adults-only resorts multiple times now, I’ll explain the key differences to help you make the right decision for your next Caribbean vacation!

    Comparison Of My Resort Experiences

This update is very timely because both resorts underwent massive renovations following Hurricane Melissa late last year. They are currently available for stays after December 18th, 2026, but you can make your bookings right now for anytime after that date. If you’re looking for a getaway sooner, Sandals has several other locations around Jamaica to choose from.

That said, Sandals Royal Caribbean and Sandals Montego Bay share a lot of similarities, but there are important differentiators I want to point out now that they’re reopening.

    • Vibe: One of the biggest differences to me was the overall vibe at each resort. Royal Caribbean has a more upscale and intimate atmosphere. It’s better suited for romantic occasions like honeymoons or anniversaries. Sandals Montego Bay, on the other hand, is more upbeat with plenty of entertainment and activities.
    • Accommodations: Sandals Royal Caribbean is famous for its offshore island with Overwater Bungalows and dedicated butler service. There are 227 rooms in total with fantastic options across all price points though. At Sandals Montego Bay, there are 264 rooms so there’s slightly more variety to choose from. A lot of the rooms here are located along the beach with brilliant ocean views. You can find beautiful Swim-Up Suites here too.
    • Inclusions: Both of the Sandals in Montego Bay are all-inclusive and even have complimentary airport transfers. You get access to 21 top notch restaurants, 16 bars, and 15 pools when you combine both locations, so it’s like two vacations in one! Importantly, if you book a Butler Elite Level suite, you get several extra perks including private BMW transfer from the airport. Best of all, there’s a strict no tipping policy so you can practically leave your billfold in the room.
    • Beach: Sandals Royal Caribbean has a smaller private beach but they also have a private island that features multiple pristine white sand beaches. The island has the Parisol Beach Club with a pool and swim-up bar that’s super fun to hang out at. Sandals Montego Bay is located on the largest private white sand beach in Jamaica though. It’s wider and longer, making it more ideal for long walks.
    • Location: The two properties are located just a couple miles apart on the north coast of Montego Bay. You can freely access all the amenities at each regardless of which one you’re staying at. Complimentary transfers back and forth operate about every 30 minutes. The good news is both resorts are also only about 10 minutes from the airport (Montego Bay is slightly closer) so you don’t waste any time getting there.
    • Price: Sandals has three different room levels, Luxury, Club, and Butler. This means you can find the exact right option for your budget at either resort. The Royal Caribbean skews less expensive with entry level Luxury rooms starting at $319 per person per night. They also have the Overwater Villas at the other end of the spectrum that are considerably more expensive, but that’s why I say there’s something for everyone. Sandals Montego Bay has great deals with rooms starting at $370 per person per night.

    Sandals Royal Caribbean Overview

    Sandals Royal Caribbean Overview

Sandals Royal Caribbean has the perfect combination of Jamaican spirit and British Colonial design. It distinguishes itself from the rest of the resorts in Montego Bay with its elegant atmosphere that’s perfect for romantic escapes.

The property is big enough to have plenty of variety and activities, yet quite intimate and peaceful at the same time. The white sand beach is a private cove with calm crystal clear water. Just a short boat ferry ride away is an offshore island exclusively for resort guests – it has 3 other pristine beaches and a pool with swim-up bar.

We were able to stay in an Overwater Bungalow for three nights when we visited. These are the nicest bungalows we’ve been to, with glass bottom floors and overwater hammocks. They also have Overwater Villas, which are slightly bigger and have a private infinity pool!

What I Love About Sandals Royal Caribbean:

    • More Intimate: Royal Caribbean is smaller than Sandals Montego Bay so it’s more peaceful. Most shared spaces were pretty low key, including the pool areas and beach. This makes it a perfect destination for anniversaries, birthdays, or honeymoons. The adults-only policy definitely helps with this too.
    • Amazing Beach: The beach is not as big as Montego Bay, but the water is more clear and there is not any sargassum here. The entrance into the water is gradual with perfectly soft sand.
    • Dining: There are 9 restaurants on the property that feel a little more swanky than Montego Bay. I really like the new Suppa restaurant that features authentic Jamaican dishes with local ingredients, but every restaurant has a unique theme so there’s plenty of variety. You don’t need to make reservations for any of them.
    • Water Activities: Unlimited scuba diving, snorkeling, paddleboarding, kayaking, and sailing. If you are already PADI certified, you just need to sign up for the scuba at the dive shop in advance. If not, you can get certified right at the resort.
    • No Surprise Fees: After you book your room there are no fees, taxes, and no tipping. They even include the airport transfers so it makes for seamless vacation from start to finish. Since we stayed in the Overwater Bungalow, we also had a private BMW transfer!
    • Entertainment: The entertainment is very good, although I would say the entertainment at Sandals Montego Bay was more lively. They have fire dancers, theme parties, live music, and more. The schedule is constantly changing but they have the schedule posted when you arrive at the resort.
    • Close Proximity: Flights to Montego Bay are frequent and normally pretty cheap. From Miami, flight times are only about 1 hour and 40 minutes, then the resort is only 10 minutes from the resort.
    • Luxurious Accomidations: Notably spacious and modern suites whether you’re on a budget or want to spring for a bungalow. Especially after this latest renovation, everything feels brand new. There’s affordable options across all room levels and preferences.
    • Exchange Program: The best part is you have full access to the neighboring Sandals Montego Bay, which means 21 restaurants, 16 bars and swim-up bars, and 15 pools to choose from. I particularly love this because you can enjoy the low-key vibe at Royal Caribbean and go to Montego Bay if you want a more upbeat atmosphere.
    • Service Level: The 5-star service really shines since it is a smaller resort. The staff knew us on a first name basis by the second day. They always went above and beyond to ensure all of our needs were met.
    • Land Sports: My wife and I really enjoy pickleball, and they have free classes from a certified instructor. There are also tennis courts, beach volleyball, and a great fitness center.

We ranked and reviewed the best Sandals Resorts after visiting all 17 locations. See which ones we love and which one will be the best fit for you dream getaway.

    Drawbacks Of Sandals Royal Caribbean:

    • Smaller Property: Okay, so I already raved about how nice and intimate this property is. But, for folks that do indeed want a more lively environment, Sandals Montego Bay is probably a better fit. It seemed to us that the average age was slightly higher at Royal Caribbean as well.
    • Solo Travelers: The resort is designed more for couples, so if you are a solo traveler it would still be feasible, but I might recommend one of the other Jamaican all-inclusive resorts that’s geared toward individuals.

    Who It's Best For:

Sandals Royal Caribbean is best for couples that want a tranquil experience with more intimate restaurant, beach, and pool atmospheres.

    Sandals Montego Bay Overview

    Sandals Montego Bay Overview

Ah yes, Sandals Montego Bay, where the story all began over 40 years ago. This location was the very first from Sandals, but after a complete top-to-bottom renovation in 2026, it is like a new resort.

The advantage to being one of the first resorts in Montego Bay is that they have an absolutely premium location. Right when you enter the lobby you see the bright blue Caribbean waters beckoning.

It’s home to the longest private white sand beach in Jamaica – which is an incredible title to hold. No vendors and you can’t even see the neighboring resorts. We spent a lot of time floating around the swimming area and lounging under the thatched roof umbrellas.

Most of the accommodations line the shoreline which means almost all of the rooms have fantastic oceanfront views. We had a swim-up suite that I would highly recommend. We were about 15 feet from the beach, and I know that because I counted 🙂

What I Love About Sandals Montego Bay:

    • Great Value: There’s a broad offering of rooms across all room levels so you can find the perfect one for the right price. Most of the rooms at Sandals Montego Bay are close to the beach or at least have Caribbean views. Aside from the affordable room prices, the flights into Montego Bay are also very cheap.
    • Pristine Beach: The private beach here is long so it’s perfect for walks along the coast line. The water is super clear and perfect for swimming and snorkeling.
    • Pool Area: The new main pool area is larger and has more activities going on. It’s much more social than the Royal Caribbean.
    • Dining Variety: There are 12 restaurants here, which is more than at the Royal Caribbean. My favorite is Butch’s, but the overall food quality is way higher than other all-inclusives I’ve been to. You do not need reservations for any of them.
    • Water Sports: Here they actually have skiing, wakeboarding, and tubing. That’s in addition to scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking, paddleboarding, and more.
    • Exchange Program: Full access to Sandals Royal Caribbean which means you can go check out the private island, restaurants, bars, and beaches for free!
    • Adults Only: For a couple’s retreat, there is nothing better than an adults-only environment.
    • Entertainment: The day and night entertainment is some of the best, with fire dancers, reggae music, live performances, and beach parties. It usually starts around 9:00 PM.
    • Local Culture: Downtown Montego Bay is a short 15 minute drive from the resort and is filled with historical buildings and shopping. There’s also a vibrant nightlife seen if you want to step-off the resort property a little bit.
    • Short Transfer Times: This resort is even closer to the airport than the Royal Caribbean. Transfer time from the airport is just over 5 minutes!

    Drawbacks Of Sandals Montego Bay:

    • Room Service Options: Only Club and Butler Level rooms offer full room service options. Luxury Level rooms do not have room service. If that’s not a deal breaker, getting a Luxury level room is a great way to save money!
    • Airport Closeness: Some people say they could hear airplanes sometimes since the resort is close to the airport. I have stayed here 3 times, and I have not had an issue with that at all. I have seen some planes flying overhead once in a while, but the noise was not noticeable to me.

    Who It's Best For:

Sandals Montego Bay is best if you want a more lively atmosphere, a variety of restaurants, a longer white sand beach, and short airport transfer times.

    Overall Conclusion

If you’re struggling to decide between Sandals Royal Caribbean and Sandals Montego Bay, you can rest easy knowing that both are 5-star luxury resorts.  The good news is you get access to both regardless of which one you pick! However, if you want a more intimate vibe with your partner, Royal Caribbean is going to be the better fit. For a more lively environment with a larger beach and more restaurants, Sandals Montego Bay will be the best option. Don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions!
